Testing for Salmonella in water
Sources of Salmonella in water
Widespread around the world, Salmonella are pathogenic bacteria naturally present in the intestines of wild and domestic animals such as poultry, wild birds, cattle, pigs…
Water is also a recognized route of contamination. It is most often contaminated by wastewater and the presence of feces from sick animals, and then contaminates food consumed by humans. Salmonella can be found on fruit and some fresh vegetables, likely through contact with water. Salmonella is also found in agricultural and domestic wastewater, freshwater, groundwater and even seawater.
Standards for Salmonella in water
The voluntary European and international standard EN ISO 6579-1 published in 2017 provides a validated method for detecting Salmonella in food.
Effects of Salmonella on the body
Both animals and humans can carry Salmonella without symptoms, allowing it to spread very easily and cause serious health problems, with severity varying depending on the bacterial strains and locations.
The illness caused by Salmonella, or salmonellosis, produces various symptoms that may appear 6 to 72 hours after infection : high fever, headaches, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and nausea that can progress to vomiting.
Outbreaks often result from consuming undercooked poultry, raw egg-based foods and dairy products.
