The WHO's perspective on enterobacteria in water*

Sources of enterobacteria in water

Enterobacteria are bacteria commonly found in the digestive tract of humans and animals.

Some also thrive in the environment, in both soil and water, particularly in moist environments.

Effects of enterobacteria on the body

Enterobacteria can cause serious health problems in humans and animals, and some strains also attack plants.

Some cause human infections that can be severe:

• Typhoid fever
• Diarrhea
• Gastroenteritis
• Enteritis
• Dysentery
• Septicemic fevers
• Plague
