    Recommendations & Pretreatments

    Recommendations

Recommended pretreatment upstream of your RO system

Raw water quality directly affects the performance, recovery rate, and service life of reverse osmosis membranes. Depending on your water composition, certain pretreatment steps are essential.

    • Presence of free chlorine:
If your water contains free chlorine, you must install an activated carbon system upstream of your RO system to protect the membranes.
    • Presence of hardness minerals or recovery rate optimization:
If your water is hard or you want to improve membrane recovery rate and longevity, installing a water softener upstream of your RO system is strongly recommended.
    • Presence of iron, ammonium, or manganese:
If iron, ammonium, or manganese concentrations are abnormally high, installing an iron filter upstream of your RO system is recommended to prevent premature fouling of the RO membranes.

Scale treatment upstream of your RO system

Scale (calcium and magnesium carbonates) quickly fouls reverse osmosis membranes, even with regular flushing cycles. Anti-scale pretreatment is therefore essential.

    Salt-based water softener

With a salt-based water softener, calcium and magnesium are replaced by sodium, which does not form scale. This type of water softener requires:

    • regular salt replenishment to ensure ion exchange,
    • resin replacement after approximately 10 years of use,
    • periodic regeneration cycles that discharge approximately X/10 m³ of water to the drain.

Regeneration takes approximately one hour. Duplex systems include a second resin column to provide a continuous supply of softened water 24/7.

    CO₂ water softener (salt-free)

With a CO₂ water softener, carbonate is converted into bicarbonate, which does not form scale.

    This system offers several advantages:

    • compact footprint,
    • simplified installation with no drain connection,
    • no wastewater,
    • operation with no hardness limit at flow rates up to 5 m³/h,
    • no maintenance.

The CO₂ cylinder (standard, with a refundable deposit) needs to be replaced approximately every 100 m³. It is available from many distributors (Metro, France Boissons, V&B, Leroy Merlin…). The average cost of a 10 kg refill is approximately 40 €.

    Chlorine treatment with activated carbon

Chlorine is particularly harmful to reverse osmosis membranes. It must be removed upstream using an activated carbon system paired with an electronic flow control valve.

The minimum recommended capacity for effective dechlorination, particularly when organic matter is present, is 150 to 200 m³ of treated water per kilogram of carbon.
