Water pH - Laboratory Analysis
Laboratory Water Analysis Options
Everything you need to know about water pH
Water pH
What is pH ? It is simply a measure of water's acidity, expressed as its potential of hydrogen. This pH depends on the environment and the composition of the soils the water passes through.
If the pH is low : the water is acidic and therefore corrosive to your pipes and harmful to you, since it carries fine metal particles stripped from the pipes directly into your stomach.
If the pH is high : the water is alkaline (or basic). It is then harsh on tissues.
Standards for pH in water
There is no WHO standard for pH in drinking water.
However, the reference value chosen for a neutral medium is a pH of 7, which is the pH of pure water at 25°C.
pH can range from 1 to 14, but drinking water is recommended to be between 5.5 and 7, meaning slightly acidic. This is one of the 4 criteria of BEV (Vincent's Bioelectronics), which defines what good drinking water should be.
At a pH of 9 or above, using the water is not recommended, even for washing.
Effects of pH on the body
pH has no direct effect on health, but over the long term, a high level of acidity in the body can have negative effects on the digestive and intestinal systems. However, this often stems from factors other than water consumption (diet, stress, illnesses…)
This article is based in part on the WHO report “ Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality ”.
How to have your water tested in a laboratory
We offer laboratory testing of your water to determine its exact pH level.
To do this, you must also order the basic laboratory analysis available here. This basic analysis includes a sampling kit and shipping it to our independent partner laboratory.
Please note that pH testing is already included in the chemistry packages. If you choose a complete chemical analysis of your water through one of these packages, you do not need to purchase this test.
Other methods for testing water pH
If you do not want the hassle of sending samples to a laboratory, or if you expect to perform this test several times, you can test your water's pH level yourself!
We sell pH tests you can perform at home, either entirely on your own using small strips that change color, or with photometers that give you very precise results.
