* Indicative recovery rate: the 75 % value applies to water with low hardness or low levels of particles that could cause scaling on the membranes. Actual performance may vary depending on feed water quality and operating conditions.
Recommendations & Pretreatments
Recommendations & pretreatments
Protect your membranes and optimize performance
Raw water quality directly affects the performance, recovery rate, and service life of reverse osmosis membranes. Depending on your water's composition, certain pretreatments may be essential to protect your system and maintain its performance over time.
Particles and coarse debris
Sand filter treatment
If your water contains coarse debris that could clog your piping, it is essential to trap it upstream using a sand filter.
The proposed system consists of natural zeolite in granules of different sizes:
- 11 kg of granules between 0.5 and 1 mm
- 9 kg of granules between 1 and 2 mm
This filter optimizes particle retention while maintaining a stable flow rate.
Empty weight: ≈ 30 kg
Dimensions: 1.08 m tall × 27 cm in diameter
Valve: Runxin TM67
Maximum flow rate: 1.04 m³/h
Required rinsing flow rate: 1.56 m³/h
Bacteria
Chlorination treatment
Bacteria are one of the main threats to RO membranes. They grow by feeding on the TFC (Thin-Film Composite) material that makes up the membranes.
When your water comes from a borehole or well, we recommend eliminating bacteria by injecting chlorine (sodium hypochlorite).
This treatment uses an Athena BD2004 dosing pump, supplied with:
- Monitoring probe
- Chlorine storage tank
- Connection accessories
Visible impurities
Micron filter treatment
If you do not have a sand filter but your water contains visible impurities, we recommend installing a micron pre-filter to protect downstream equipment: your water softener, valves, and membranes.
Good to know: the filter comes standard with a 25 micron filter cartridge. You can switch to a 20 micron filter cartridge later, particularly if you do not order a supply of filters with your system.
Iron, ammonium, and manganese
Iron filter treatment
Iron, ammonium, and manganese tend to clog reverse osmosis membranes prematurely. When they are present in excessive amounts, a specific treatment is strongly recommended.
The proposed iron filter consists of:
- 50 kg of pyrolusite
- 70 kg of flint forming the support layer
You need to add approximately 10 % pyrolusite per year to maintain the effectiveness of the filter media.
Empty weight: ≈ 150 kg
Dimensions: 1.58 m tall × 33 cm in diameter
Valve: Runxin TM67
Maximum flow rate: 0.52 m³/h
Required rinsing flow rate: 2.19 m³/h
Limescale
Water softener treatment
Limescale, composed mainly of calcium and magnesium carbonates, can quickly clog reverse osmosis membranes, even with regular rinsing cycles.
We therefore strongly recommend neutralizing limescale upstream using a salt-based or CO₂ water softener.
Salt-based water softener
Calcium and magnesium are replaced with sodium, which does not form scale. This system requires:
- Regular salt replenishment
- Resin replacement after approximately 10 years
- Regeneration cycles that discharge approximately X/10 m³ of water
Regeneration takes approximately one hour. Duplex systems provide a continuous water supply 24/7.
Empty weight: ≈ 50 kg per column
Dimensions: 1.09 m tall × 22 cm in diameter
Valve: Runxin TM73
Maximum flow rate: 0.80 m³/h
Chlorine and organic compounds
Activated carbon treatment
Chlorine is extremely harmful to RO membranes. It must be removed upstream using an activated carbon system.
This treatment also removes:
- Organic compounds
- Tastes and odors
- Water turbidity and discoloration
The proposed system contains:
- 25 kg of mineral-based activated carbon
- 7 kg of flint
Empty weight: ≈ 50 kg
Dimensions: 1.40 m tall × 31 cm in diameter
Valve: Runxin TM67
Maximum flow rate: 0.70 m³/h
Required rinsing flow rate: 1.85 m³/h
Estimated service life: in the most demanding dechlorination applications, the minimum service life of activated carbon is estimated at 150 to 200 m³ of treated water per kilogram of carbon.
