What is a nitrate removal system?
A nitrate removal system uses a nitrate removal resin as a filter medium to reduce nitrate levels in drinking water. It works through ion exchange, during which nitrate ions in the water are replaced by ions of another substance, usually chloride.
Here is how it works :
- Nitrate removal resin : this is the key element in the process. These polymers contain functional groups capable of capturing nitrate ions in the water.
- Nitrate removal filter : the system includes a vessel filled with these nitrate removal resins and an automatic valve (the same as for a water softener). Water passes through this vessel and comes into contact with the resins.
- Ion exchange : as water flows through the vessel, nitrate ions (NO3-) in the water bind to the nitrate removal resins, while ions of another element (usually chloride Cl-) that were initially bound to the resins are released into the water.
- Regeneration : over time, the resins become saturated with nitrate ions and must be regenerated to maintain their ion exchange capacity. This step involves passing a brine solution through the vessel. Chloride ions in the brine replace the nitrate ions bound to the resins, releasing the nitrates into the saltwater. This process restores the resins' ability to remove nitrates from the water.
- Rinsing : after regeneration, the system is rinsed to remove any excess brine and ensure that the treated water does not contain excessively high salt levels.
General specifications
- Metered valves
- High-pressure GRP vessel

Maintenance and Consumables
This nitrate removal system should be used with a nitrate removal resin, available here.
It is difficult to give a precise figure for resin service life (10, 100, 1,000 regenerations), as it depends greatly on water quality and operating conditions.
The average service life of nitrate removal resins is generally 3 to 7 years, depending on several factors :
- Water quality : concentrations of nitrates, sulfates, chlorides and organic matter.
- Number of regenerations : the more frequent they are, the faster the wear.
- Regeneration conditions : brine quality and concentration, proper rinsing.
- Maintenance : regular checks of the water and resin condition.
In practice, in installations with low consumption, resins can last more than 7 years. Under industrial conditions or heavy use, capacity begins to decrease after 4–5 years.
In summary, their service life is often comparable to that of water softening resins under good operating conditions.
