CIP stations for industrial reverse osmosis membranes
CIP (Clean In Place) stations, also known as NEP cleaning-in-place systems, are designed for chemically cleaning reverse osmosis membranes without disassembling the system.
They restore the flow rate, filtration quality, and performance of reverse osmosis or nanofiltration membranes fouled by mineral, organic, colloidal, or microbiological deposits.
This range of CIP stations suits industrial water treatment systems, from compact 2.5" / 4" membranes to industrial 8" membranes.
Why use a CIP station ?
- Restore membrane production flow rate
- Maintain the water purification rate
- Limit performance losses caused by clogging
- Reduce premature membrane replacements
- Preserve membranes during extended shutdowns
Available range
| Model | Compatible membranes | Application | Flow rate | Power | Tank |
| CIP 2.5" / 4" | 2.5" and 4" | Small RO systems | 1.2 to 2.3 m³/h | 0.5 kW | 100 liters |
| CIP 4040 | 4040 | Compact industrial RO systems | 2 to 3 m³/h | 0.5 kW | 100 liters |
| CIPSEP | 8" | Manual cleaning of 8" membranes | 10 m³/h | 2.2 kW | Solution prepared in a tank |
| CIPSEP616 | 8" | Medium-capacity industrial applications | 8 m³/h at 5 bar 12 m³/h at 3.5 bar |
2.3 kW | 350 liters |
| CIPSEP2030 | 8" | High-capacity industrial applications | 20 m³/h at 4.4 bar 30 m³/h at 3.6 bar |
12 kW | 1,000 liters |
| CIPSEP3648 | 8" | High-capacity industrial applications | 64 m³/h at 2.8 bar | 20 kW | 1,500 liters |
How CIP cleaning works
Before cleaning, the industrial RO system must be shut down. The CIP station is then connected to the system’s dedicated ports : CIP supply, CIP return, and permeate.
The solution tank is filled with purified water, followed by the required amount of cleaning chemical. The solution is mixed and then circulated through the vessels containing the membranes.
During the operation, you must monitor :
- the solution’s pH
- the temperature
- the solution’s color
- the operating pressure
Most cleaning protocols call for alkaline cleaning, followed by rinsing, then acid cleaning.
Applications
2.5" / 4" membranes
For small reverse osmosis systems, compact industrial RO systems, laboratories, or commercial applications.
4040 membranes
For industrial systems using 4040 membranes that require periodic membrane maintenance.
8" membranes
For high-flow industrial systems, water treatment plants, food processing, process water, or municipal applications.
Benefits of CIP stations
- Cleaning without disassembly : membranes remain in place in their vessels.
- Time savings : faster, easier maintenance.
- Longer lifespan : reduced clogging and fouling.
- Better performance : restored flow and purification rate.
- Lower costs : less production downtime and fewer membrane replacements.
Main components by model
- Cleaning solution tank
- Grundfos industrial pump or equivalent
- Big Blue protective filtration or multiple stainless steel filters, depending on the model
- Monitoring pressure gauges
- PVC or stainless steel valves and piping, depending on the configuration
- Powder-coated steel frame
- Electrical enclosure or cabinet
When should you clean the membranes ?
Chemical cleaning is recommended when system performance drops significantly.
- Reduced water production flow rate
- Increased permeate conductivity
- Increased differential pressure
- Visible clogging or suspected biofilm
Regular cleaning helps maintain consistent water quality and optimize your system’s operating costs.
Membrane preservation
CIP stations can also be used to fill the vessels with a preservation solution when the RO system is shut down for an extended period.
This operation protects the membranes against microbiological growth and prevents deterioration during periods of inactivity.
Choosing the right model
Your choice of CIP station depends mainly on :
- the size of the installed membranes
- the number of membranes to clean
- the required flow rate
- the required volume of cleaning solution
- the size of the industrial system
For compact systems, the 2.5", 4", or 4040 models are suitable. For high-capacity industrial RO systems, the CIPSEP, CIPSEP616, and CIPSEP2030 models are recommended.
