Use
Sodium bisulfite is primarily used to remove residual chlorine before water enters reverse osmosis membranes. The dosage depends on the chlorine concentration in the feed water. Chlorine is highly aggressive and can damage membranes, so neutralizing it is essential.
Sodium bisulfite dosage based on residual chlorine
Sodium bisulfite reacts with chlorine, neutralizing each part per million (ppm) of free chlorine in the feed water. Here are the basic steps for determining the dosage.
- Measuring residual chlorine :
- Measure the free chlorine concentration in the incoming water (expressed in ppm or mg/L).
- Sodium bisulfite dosage :
- To neutralize 1 mg/l (or ppm) of free chlorine, approximately 1.8 mg/l of sodium bisulfite (NaHSO₃) is generally required.
Other considerations
- Excess bisulfite : A slight excess of bisulfite (generally 10 to 20 % more) is commonly added to ensure that no free chlorine remains.
- Flow Rate and Concentration Factor (FC) : Water flow rate and FC can affect the total amount of bisulfite needed
