Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride. It is a strong acid commonly used in various industrial and laboratory applications.
Uses of hydrochloric acid
It has several uses in water treatment :
- Neutralizing alkaline water : Hydrochloric acid is used to adjust water pH, particularly to lower the pH of excessively alkaline water.
- Regenerating ion exchange resins : In water treatment systems, ion exchange resins are regenerated with acidic solutions, often hydrochloric acid, to restore their ion exchange capacity.
- Removing limescale deposits : Used to dissolve calcium carbonate (limescale) deposits that can form in water treatment systems.
Precautions for use
Hydrochloric acid is corrosive and can cause burns to skin and mucous membranes. It is important to handle this acid with appropriate protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, chemical-resistant clothing) and follow safety protocols.
