Does Ultrafiltration Work for Limescale?

Although effective, ultrafiltration systems do not filter out limescale. We explain why in this article and present effective alternatives for fighting limescale.

NO, ultrafiltration does not filter out limescale.

Soils in France contain varying amounts of limestone. Groundwater passing through these rocks picks up limescale-forming minerals: chemically, magnesium and calcium ions enter the water. As they combine, these ions form crystals that grow over time and form scale deposits.

Scale is a scourge for pipes and all household appliances. Limescale also attacks your skin and hair by drying them out. It is therefore natural and sensible to look for ways to fight limescale.

Does ultrafiltration technology remove limescale?

Ultrafiltration is a membrane filtration method, meaning that the water to be treated passes through a membrane. All substances larger than the membrane's pores will be retained, purifying the water of the substances you want to remove.

In this image, you can see the different substances retained by the ultrafiltration membrane.

Because calcium and magnesium ions are smaller than the ultrafiltration mesh, they pass through the membrane. This technology therefore does not filter out limescale.

Salt-based water softeners

The most effective way to get rid of limescale permanently remains a salt-based water softener. It works on the principle of ion exchange. Calcium and magnesium ions are replaced with sodium ions. This is why salt is used and mixed with water to regenerate the resin when it becomes saturated with magnesium and calcium ions.

Electromagnetic systems

They change the structure of limescale crystals so they cannot stick to one another. These systems therefore protect your pipes from the formation of scale deposits. Please note that this type of system does not remove limescale; it only changes its state to prevent deposits. When exposed to air, the limescale returns to its original form.

The hardness reducer: SCALEX

This filter is a hardness reducer rather than a water softener, because it does not remove the limescale present in the water passing through it. The resin will prevent limescale crystals from growing, and they will be broken into several small pieces. Finally, the resin prevents the crystals from combining into a larger particle.
