Why is there chlorine in tap water?

Chlorine is a disinfectant used to ensure that water remains safe all the way through the distribution system until it comes out of your faucet.

It destroys certain microorganisms and bacteria present in the water.

Why does my tap water smell more strongly of chlorine right now?

Some drinking water networks have adjusted their chlorine treatment. This slight increase can be enough to give your water a somewhat stronger smell than usual. During lockdown, many businesses are closed. As a result, water consumption decreases during this period. Water therefore stays in the pipes longer, and to prevent its quality from deteriorating, the chlorine dose is increased slightly during treatment.

Is bottled water a solution?

In response to this change, some people choose to stock up on more packs of bottled water. This is not always easy to manage during lockdown… Having to plan to bring numerous bottles home along with all your other groceries can be a real obstacle course.
