7 Tips to Reduce Your Water Consumption

Why save water? To save money, but also to conserve as much water as possible as it becomes scarce in some regions. An environmentally responsible choice that benefits both the planet and your finances : let's break bad habits by adopting simple practices!

As a reminder, in France the average price per m3 of water is 2.03 € and each French person uses an average of 148 l of drinking water per day, do the math!

Saving water in the bathroom

Tip No. 1 : Turn off the water when you brush your teeth or wash your hands.

A small, simple habit that makes a big difference!

-          Brushing your teeth or washing your hands with the faucet running : 13.5 liters of water used

-          Brushing your teeth or washing your hands with a controlled flow rate : 0.5 liters of water used

Tip No. 2 : Choose showers instead of baths.

About 60 liters are used on average for a shower, compared with 200 liters for a bath. If you want to avoid wasting water by flushing the toilet, you can also pee in the shower…

Tip No. 3 : Reduce the amount of water used per flush.

Toilet flushing accounts for about 20 to 30 % of household water use : a significant amount! You can easily adjust the float setting on your toilet bowl's mechanism, or place a plastic bottle filled with water at the bottom of the bowl. It will take up some of the total volume, reducing the amount of water needed to refill it. You can also use a plastic bag filled with water, but whichever method you choose, be careful not to block the mechanism!

Tip No. 4 : Flush less often.

One flush : 5 to 6 liters of water gone… so after a quick pee, you can wait before flushing!

Tip No. 5 :
Wash vegetables over a basin.

Instead of under a running faucet. You can then reuse the water to water your plants or for the toilet bowl.

Tip No. 6 : Use the “eco” or “half-load” setting on your washing machine and dishwasher.

Today, a washing machine uses about 80 liters of water, compared with 130 liters 20 years ago. A dishwasher uses 30 liters per cycle instead of 70 liters.

Only run wash cycles when your machines are full!

Tip No. 7 : Use 2 basins when washing dishes by hand.

It's easy : one basin for washing and one for rinsing. And don't leave the faucet running! If you only have one basin, plan ahead : first wet your dishes, then soap them up. Only then should you rinse them, instead of completing all 3 steps for each item.
