Plastic Water Bottles: A Chronicle of Global Pollution

When you walk along beaches, even on our French shores, it is not unusual to find waste washed onto the sand by the waves. And among this trash, plastic water bottles appear far too often… This pollution is more than an eyesore: it is a real scourge worldwide, with significant consequences for our environment.

Most water bottles produced around the world are made of plastic (PET), a petroleum derivative. Producing water bottles uses large amounts of fossil energy and water: an estimated 3 liters of water and a quarter of a liter of petroleum are needed to produce one bottle. Using water to hold water seems a little strange, doesn't it? And that is before considering that, in France, a water bottle travels an average of 300 kilometers to reach a household… Needless to say, its carbon footprint is far from ideal!

A water bottle takes between 500 and 1,000 years to break down when discarded in nature. And when waste is buried, its breakdown causes soil pollution that affects the environment and, consequently, our food and way of life. As water seeps into the ground, it picks up toxins and harmful particles. Through the water cycle, these pollutants then end up in rainwater and the oceans.

The convenience argument for single-use plastic water bottles is now hard to defend. There are many ways to stop relying on plastic bottles. In neighboring countries such as Belgium, just a few kilometers from our headquarters in Roubaix, reusable glass water bottles and deposit-return systems offer an alternative that has proven itself for many years. Nothing new, just a little common sense.

To keep a supply of water within reach and stay properly hydrated throughout the day, you can also rely on reusable water bottles or thermoses. And the advantage is that there is something for every taste and every age! From a stylish model you choose as a treat for yourself to an illustrated one you can tuck into your child's schoolbag, or even a customizable one, you are sure to find something you like. And if you enjoy sports, you can also choose a backpack with a hydration bladder. These are very convenient for staying hydrated and performing at your best during exercise!
