7 More Tips to Reduce Your Water Consumption

You've already made some efforts to reduce your water consumption, but want to go further? Follow our 7 additional tips throughout your home!

Saving water throughout your home

Tip No. 1 : Check for leaky faucets.

Drip, drip, drip… a few drops… that add up to rivers, or almost! It's just a few drops, and you tell yourself it's no big deal and that you'll fix that leaky kitchen faucet later, another day… We suggest trying this test, and you'll soon change your mind! Place a large container under your faucet, note the time, and come back 15 minutes later to measure the amount of water collected in it. Then multiply that volume of water by 96 (4x24) : you'll get the amount of water lost each day. All that's left is to grab your toolbox!

Amount of water lost through a leak :

  • Dripping leak : 4 liters/hour, or 35 m3/year = 108 €
  • Thin trickle : 16 liters/hour, or 140 m3/year = 435 €
  • Steady trickle : 65 liters/hour, or 550 m3/year = 1,712 €
  • Leaky toilet : 25 liters/hour, or 220 m3/year = 684 €

Tip No. 2 : Fit your faucets with a water-saving device, or aerator.

Very easy to install, a flow restrictor reduces water consumption from 15 liters per minute to 5 liters per minute!

Tip No. 3 : Fit your faucets with thermostatic mixing valves.

These faucets let you set the water temperature : you no longer leave the water running for 4 minutes before it reaches the temperature you want, since it is preset.

Tip No. 4 : Replace your old toilets with dual-flush toilets.

A good way to save water, since one button provides a full flush and the other a half flush (as long as you explain how it works to the whole family).

Tip No. 5 : Collect shower water to water your garden or houseplants.

Instead of wasting the cold water that runs while you wait for the right temperature, collect it in a bucket or basin.

Tip No. 6 : Buy a washing machine or dishwasher rated energy class A, A+, A++, or A+++.

It will cost a little more upfront, of course, but it will save you water and electricity.

Tip No. 7 : Change your habits and switch to a dry toilet.

An ideal solution for those lucky enough to have a garden, dry toilets are environmentally friendly and economical.
